Thank you Ivan for the review. I made a new mix just after uploading first one, where I remixed the drums and I wanted to change the mix in the competition, but with no success, even if I wrote you on the "contact" link. My first mix was already approved for competition. But it's ok even like that. It's was just mixing for fun :)
Thanks "thatcrazyguy"for liking my mix :)

Thank you for the feedback everyone. Being my first contest I wasn't sure how far I should step out of the box of simplicity. Now I know for next time. I must agree that these contests are a great way to learn from other engineers perspective. Looking forward to the next Head2head! :)

IVAN - first I say that I appreciated the opportunity to enter a contest like this. It gave me the opportunity to hear how different engineers would mix the same material. While working on my mix, I wondered how much input the artist, composer, or producer might have had in choosing the mic set up and which tracks to include in the mix. I looked up Lorenzo Price(after creating my mix) and saw that he is the composer and artist in addition to being the recording engineer.

SAVAGEO - I agree that it is important to capture and use every audio detail contained in the tracks. I'm also a musician, and I tried not to let my personal preferences influence my decisions. But listening to the tracks, I heard them as more of a traditional jazz composition played in a modern fusion style.

THATCRAZYGUY - Thanks again for the info. The metering levels are another level of detail to consider.

EVERYBODY - By listening to and analyzing the volume levels of your mixes, I think I have been able to determine which spectrum analyzer gives me the most accurate visual representation of volume levels. And, I think you all had the same or similar vision as the artist.

ivan thank you for the feedback!

So uhhhh, don't want to pull a miss-universe like fiasco -- of the three mixes listed on the home page, is the first one listed the winner?

Ivan,

Thank you for your comment. This contest was the first one I have entered so I am not really up to date with how things work. :)
Yes, I did intend to make the mix sound very simple. Being a musician myself with a jazz background I am aware that every note from every instruments needs to be heard throughout the entire song - from how the drummer allows the resonance of each drum to ring out to the clicking of saxophone keys as these examples are sometimes meant to be used as an audible part of the song the musician intends to speak with. Every musician has a turn at a solo which can make blending the instruments a bit of a challenge. This recording was well done and the musicians were awesome!! I felt my heart sink a little when I realized I was going to be forced to cut parts out due to the 50Mb limit. Good thing I didn't actually have to present that to the band! haha!!

The style of each engineer was apparent in each of the examples I listened to. If I were the composer to this track it would be very difficult deciding which flavor of mix I want to move forward with.
All of the mixes I heard here were really good.

Ron

Great Mixes Overall, Here Are My Reviews:

Raul - overall loved your mix. great balance and I like that you kept the compression in what I would call "correct for the genre". Not as dynamic and "in your face" as your competitor SAGA but I did like that you were one of the few that kept things congealed and genre familiar.

SAGA - liked this mix, but here I felt like the compression was out of character for Jazz Fusion. This is one of the things I always have to keep in mind when I do non-pop genres. Great Detail in your instruments but specifically the Drums is where I'd say they were more rock then Jazz drums.

Eric - Drums were very "rock" that would be the only criticism. you'll notice that when you hear the elongation of the tom hits and the timbre of the snares. This compression & EQ treatment is cool but not what I associate with Jazz Fusion. Just my take. The rest of the mix seemed cool and really was happy with it on my end.

Jebelleami - I know you've already referenced the volume issue but actually when I raised the volume to a comparable level as the other mixes, this was a really nice mix. For me this was a much more characteristic mix for the genre.

Ron - Nicely congealed mix. A lot of other mixers in these head2heads took the time to be try to make it a little different whereas I felt like you kept things pretty simple with a straight forward mix.

Vince - Liked the drums a lot in your mix and this is where I found the most issues throughout the other mixes. The compression overall was some of the best along with Raul. Panning was a little "different" for me but that's just a taste issue, haha. Nothing wrong, just would have liked that lead GTR more center, it sat slightly to the right to me which was cool just different. Balance was awesome though.

Great mixes overall, This was a really nice showing for this track!

jebelleami you're welcome. That's awesome that you listen to your music on different devices and mediums. And now you have a feel of how the loudness of your mixes compares to others. That's part of the reason I wanted to participate too, besides of course looking for general feedback.

And thanks for your feedback as well. You're right, my mix isn't too low. I just did some quick research and my mix loudness is actually fine at roughly -14.5LUFS. Spotify, Youtube, iTunes (streaming and soundcheck) and Tidal currently normalize to targets of -14LUFS, -13LUFS, -16LUFS, and -14LUFS, respectively, as of May, 2017.

thatcrazyguy - Thanks for the feedback. I agree that my mix mix volume is low compared to the others I've listened to. One reason for my entry was to calibrate the volume of of my mixes on other projects. I usually listen to CDs and MP3s on different devices, online and offline, and different types of music. Your mix doesn't sound low to me. jebelleami

Ok I see more mixes, awesome...

Eric Reid - Good mix, nice and loud. My thoughts on your mix are pretty much the same as my thoughts on Saga Lenin's mix. I do admittedly prefer Saga's over yours due to relatively more clarity and space, but the compressed drums and your mixing style would definitely work well in other genres. Regardless of all this, I still think your mix is good, and I'm just one guy.

jebelleami - My mix isn't that loud, but yours sounds really low. Interesting approach to your mix. Sounds like you lowered or took out some tracks, resulting in a quiet, calm mix. Besides the volume issue, Your mix sounds very good.

Savageo - Another interesting mix. I like your use of effects throughout, and what sounds to be some automation as well. Perhaps a little more bluesy processing than what I envision, but of course my opinion is no more valuable than yours or anyone else's. Overall a great mix, and probably my second fave of the ones I listened to.

Me - I usually beat myself and hate my mixes, but I actually think I did a pretty decent job on this one. Two or three things about my mix I would fix in a future version,  but hey, I've seen chefs mess up on Chopped and still win. I mean, somebody has to win, right?!  :o ;D
